The Maldives consists of over 1,200 islands, spanning approximately 900 kilometers along the Indian Ocean. Maldives has been one of the world’s development success stories for the past three decades. The country was one of the world's 20 poorest countries, with a population of 156,000 in the early 1980s. Today, the effort put by the Government has made Maldives turns to a middle-income country with a per capita income of over $6,300.

The outlook for Maldives economy is to sustain moderate growth and the Government is planning to boost growth potential by allocating higher capital expenditure and the promotion of exclusive economic zones. Nevertheless, precedent macroeconomic policies will help the government to achieve its development agenda to sustain the country's impressive human development progress.
