Located on the borders of the Mediterranean Sea, between Lebanon and Turkey, Syria is a lower middle-income country that has been witnessing significant political turmoil in the recent years.
The economy has witnessed a dramatic contraction since the beginning of the conflict that is rapidly draining the human capital, productive assets and economic wealth of the country. Lack of access to health care and scarcity of medicine have led to an unpleasant health situation. Poor food availability and quality and cuts in subsidies on bread has exacerbated nutritional deprivation. In addition, the political conflict has resulted in a trend of large current account deficits and a depreciating exchange rate.
